Like the Estonians, the Latvians have preserved their language and culture under various foreign dominations, mainly by singing. 150 years ago, in 1873, the first singing festival was held in Riga. Here the song “Dievs, svētī Latviju” (“God, bless Latvia”) by Kārlis Baumanis was heard for the first time. In this song, the word Latvija (“Latvia”) was pronounced aloud for the first time. It became the national anthem of the country. With the multiple award-winning Latvian choir Balsis from Riga – awarded as the best choir in Latvia – we celebrate the great anniversary of Latvia and at the same time thirty years of Usedom Music Festival.
