Composer George Walker was the first African American to receive the Pulitzer Prize for composition. His poignant ‘ Lyric for Strings ‘, carried by tender noblesse, together with the combative-patriotic Symphony No. 7 written by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák , encloses Gustav Mahler’s songs ‘ Aus des Knaben Wunderhorn ‘. The American baritone Thomas Hampson , the song’s ambassador in demand around the world, lets it blossom at the end of the New York Philharmonic ‘s exclusive residency in the historic power station hall on the island of Usedom.
