‘Quartet thoughts always’ – Robert Schumann noted in the household book in February 1842. It was to be a year of incredible creativity, in which the composer completed three quartets at once, in order to place the manuscripts on the gift table of his wife Clara in June, on her 23rd birthday. A few decades later, in the same place, in Leipzig, the composer Juozas Gruodis completed his string quartet in D minor, which was imbued with Lithuanian folk melodies. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, once founded by the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The renowned Leipzig String Quartet, a regular guest of the Usedom Music Festival, brings together master composers in this illustrious two-country round-up in 2021.
